Johann Berthelsen, American, 1883-1967.
Johann Berthelsen was a noted painter and teacher. His family emigrated to the U.S. in 1889
from Denmark, settling in Chicago. Berthelsen studied and taught music in Chicago, but his
contemporaries convinced him to paint. Berthelsen moved to NYC in 1920 and was soon dedicated
to painting full time. He was a memeber of the prestigious Salmagundi Club in NYC, and the
American Watercolor Society. Berthelsen's paintings were exhibited extensively throughout the
country. He is best known for his beautiful Impresssionist renderings of NYC in snow, of which,
this painting is a wonderful example.
