Mary Butler

Mary Butler

Mary Butler, American. 1865-1946.

Mary Butler was born October 27, 1865 in Uwchlan, Pennsylvania. She enjoyed extensive training in art at
the Philadelphia School of Design for Women, graduating in 1894, and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts,
1896-1902 where she studied with William Merrit Chase, Robert Henri and Edward Redfield.

While Mary Butler summered in Maine and wintered in Philadelphia she also traveled extensively. Some of her
paintings include locations in California, Canada and Norway. She also painted a series of colorful landscapes
in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, such as the painting featured on this page involving bold color with
a heavy impasto. A number of these New Hampshire scenes, including "Mount Washington from Sugar Hill",
"Mount Garfield", "Franconia Notch" and "Mount Lafayette" were exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy
(PAFA) Annuals between 1917 and 1922.

All her career Butler promoted the arts in Philadelphia and maintained a relationship with the Pennsylvania
Academy of the Fine Arts. Her first exhibit was in 1894 at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and she
continued to show there most years through 1946, including a solo show in 1942. Mary Butler was honorary
president of the Fellowship of the Philadelphia Academy of the Fine Arts at the time of her death, March 16, 1946.
