
Andre Gisson, American. 1928-2003.Andre Gisson is an outstanding American Impressionist who focused on the depiction of countryside and city streets especially of Paris and New York. His history is somewhat unclear as Gisson is often said to be a Frenchman born in 1910 who has been dead since 1975. However, he was actually born to Norwegian-American parents in 1928. His grandparents migrated to the United States in the summer of 1899, and his family has remained in Brooklyn, New York ever since. Gisson changed his name and nationality to help his career. He began drawing and painting at an early age, and his love of art has never subsided. During World War II, he enlisted himself in the Army Core of Engineers, aiding in the reconstruction of airfields and roadways. Because of his work in the Army, Gisson had the opportunity to travel rather extensively through Japan and Paris, painting all the while. After the war, he received a scholarship from the prestigious Pratt Institute where he continued to develop and strengthen his training and technique. Gisson's paintings create a reflective mood of serenity, and the profound French influence in his works in undeniable.
