M S Hart

Margery Stocking Hart, American 20th century.

Margery Stocking Hart was born in New Jersey and settled in Greenwich, CT. She was schooled
as a painter and an illustrator and her works are most closely associated with the Old Lyme
School of Art in Connecticut. Hart studied at the prestigious Chase School of Art in NYC
and also at the Art Student League with noted landscape painter Frank Vincent Dumond, one of
the most influential teachers at the Art Student League and also a director of the Lyme School
of Art in CT. Hart's style closely follows the style for which F.V. Dumond was famous.

She spent many years as an illustrator for Harper's Magazine before turning to painting full-time.
She was noted for her floral still lifes of which this is a lovely example.
