
Sylvester Phelps Hodgdon, American. 1830-1906.Sylvester Phelps Hodgdon studied and resided in the Boston area. He began his career painting portraits but by 1864 he was painting and exhibiting landscapes at The National Academy of Design. He also exhibited at The Boston Athenaeum and The Boston Art Club. Hodgdon traveled and painted throughout New England painting landscapes and coastal scenes. The Maine coast and the White Mountains of New Hampshire were among his favorite subjects.
