William C Palmer, American (1906-1987).
William Charles Palmer was born in Des Moines, Iowa and studied at the Art Students League in New York
with Thomas Hart Benton, and Kenneth Hayes Miller. He also studied in France at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts.
Palmer taught at the Art Students League, and served as the Director of the Munson-Williams-Proctor
Institute School of Art in Utica NY from 1941 until the 1970's. He was also a member of the Hamilton
College art faculty and a former vice- president of the National Society of Mural Painters.
During his career he exhibited at the Art Students League, the Salons of America, the Carnegie Institute,
Paris Salon; the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; National Academy of Design; Salmagundi Club;
Munson-Williams-Proctor Institute; Corcoran Gallery; Brooklyn Museum; Virginia Museum of Fine Arts;
Art Institute of Chicago; Whitney Museum of American Art; and the Museum of Modern Art, NY.
His paintings are included in the collections of The Whitney Museum of Art, The Metropolitan Museum of
Art, The Museum of Fine Arts Boston, The White House, The Munson Williams-Proctor Museum, and The
National Gallery, Washington, D.C., to name a few. In his later years, Mr. Palmer had worked on displays
for the Metropolitan Museum and the Whitney.
