Carl Ringius, Swedish/American (1879-1950).Carl Ringius was born and studied art in Sweden. He immigrated to the United States as a young man eventually settling in Hartford, Connecticut. after spending time in the Chicago area where there was a sizable Swedish population. He was extraordinarily accomplished as an artist and quickly became an active member of many of the most prestigious art associations of the time, including the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts (of which he was director from 1935), the New Haven Paint and Clay Club, the North Shore and Gloucester Art Associations in Massachusetts, the Illinois Academy of Fine Arts, and the Connecticut League of Art Students, to name a few. Ringius traveled extensively throughout New England, painting impressionistic city scenes and landscapes of the countryside. As with many artists of his day, he was particularly taken with the Cape Ann coastal region of Massachusetts with its active fishing ports and dock life. The painting on exhibit here is a wonderful example of Ringius's brushwork and artful command of mood and color. Ringius exhibited his paintings extensively throughout his career and received many prizes including awards from CAFA, the New Haven Paint and Clay Club, the Studio Guild, and the Scandinavian American Exchange in Chicago. In addition to his painting, Ringius was also a writer, designer and creator of block prints. "Approach of Evening" Signed lower left. Salmagundi Club exhibition tag Oil on canvas. 16" x 20" Price $ |
