Anthony Toney

Anthony Toney, American (1913-2004).

A painter, muralist and long-time teacher at the New School of Social Research in New York, Anthony Toney
was born to Syrian immigrants in Gloversville, New York. He earned a Bachelor's Degree from Syracuse University
in 1934. He studied in Paris from 1937 to 1938 at the Ecole des Beaux Arts and the Academie Grande Chaumiere.

In 1952, he began teaching at the New School in New York City. Three years later, he earned a PhD in fine arts
and education from the Columbia University Teachers College. In the 1930s, Toney painted murals for the Works
Progress Administration,(WPA), fought with the Abraham Lincoln Brigade in the Spanish Civil War, and served in
the U.S. Army Air Force during World War II.

Just before the outbreak of that war, he had his first solo exhibition, which was in New York in 1941 at the
Wakefield Gallery. Exhibition venues included ACA Galleries, NY, the Corcoran Gallery in Washington DC; the Art
Institute of Chicago; the Society of Independent Artists, the Whitney Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, NY,
the Penn. Academy of Fine Arts, (PAFA) and the National Academy of Design.

Toney was a member of the National Academy of Design, the Artists Equity Association, Audubon Artists and the
National Society of Mural Painters. Toney's paintings were the recipients of many awards, including the Childe Hassam
purchase prize at the National Institute of Arts and Letters, awards from the National Academy of Design, Columbia
University, and the Grumbacher Award, Audubon Artists. Toney's paintings are included in the collections of the
Whitney Museum of Modern Art, NY, the National Academy, and Syracuse University, to name a few.
