Carroll Sargent Tyson, American (1877-1956). Carroll Tyson was a long-time resident of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania who also worked out of a studio in Northeast Harbor, Maine. He studied at (PAFA)the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and with William Merritt Chase, Thomas Anshutz, and Cecilia Beaux. He also studied in Germany with Carl Marr. Tyson was a member of National Academy of Design, the Philadelphia Art Club, and the Society of Independent Artists. Tyson exhibited annually at PAFA, winning a medal in 1915. This painting was executed in 1934 and was exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in 1935, under the title, "Maine Landscape". Carroll Tyson was also a frequent exhibitor at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington D.C., the Society of Independent Artists, the Philadelphia Art Club, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Whitney Musuem of American Art. Tyson's paintings are included in the collections of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Philadelphia Art Club, and Pennsylvania State College.
