S. W. Griggs, Whitehead Cohasset, 1875 — Blue Heron Fine Art Blog

A Personal Favorite with a Historical Connection

Samuel W. Griggs “Whitehead, Cohasset, MA 1875”

As a long time resident of Cohasset, MA  this painting is one of my personal favorites of 19th Century American art. Painted following the end of the Civil War, this scene represents the return of our nation to domestic tranquility. Smoke rises from a home by the shore, busy packets ferry guests from Boston to the Glades Hotel, and a farmer harvests the salt marsh hay of the tidal flats.

During the mid to late 19th century, Samuel Griggs, like other painters of his day, Francis Silva, A. T.  Bricher, and Sanford Gifford, traveled extensively throughout New England, painting beautiful coastal scenes such as this.
